The best way to improve the Leafs would be to allow another NHL franchise in the GTA. The best way to improve the Canadian would be to open up dairy, poultry, commercial air travel, media and financial services to competition.
While I am not sure there is a connection between the Liberal party and the Leafs, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your comments. Re the budget, I was terrified to hear Jolie say the budget takes a long time to prepare. Absolute dismissal of the Canadian taxpayer as a stakeholder.
Follow the money. Can no longer see where it gets spent. Stop the money. WEXIT. This so-called confederation is no longer working. Time to depart and let the eastern bastards freeze in the dark. BC will follow despite any bleating from their current commie NDP government
I like your writing Pragmatic Canadian and your tongue-in-cheek humour. Honestly, I don't watch hockey or many sports. I think sometimes it is largely theatre, especially the NHL. I can't understand the loyalty that Maple Leaf fans have and only wish they could be even half as excited about the state of our country. As for the Liberals, I don't understand how so many will vote for them in light of the last 10 years of utter failure. Are people under some kind of stupidity spell or are they so Liberal engrained that they don't care what has happened under their watch. It must be more like those who still have 'hope' that the Leafs will win (not since 1967), that vote for the Liberals, not caring about their dismal failures of recent. It's a head scratcher for sure.
Dude! In Canadian politics the Federal Election is Lord Stanley's Cup.
The Conservatives have won the Cup THREE times, 2006-2008 -2011 until 2015
That's a nine year run. Kind of like the Oilers?
The Liberals have won the Cup FOUR times. 2015 -2019-2021-2025. Kind of like the Habs?
The Maple Laughs have won Shit since 1967. The Tragically Hip even confirmed this with a song. Why even bother using those poor bastard as a comparison. Of course, it could be that you are a bit twisted and want to stick the knife in this freshly opened wound?
We’re nearing the end of May …. no parliament since October’s Liberal green slush fund debacle reared its inconvenient head scaring them sh**less. And the Ontario/Atlantic idiots re-elected them! Tell me again - exactly which type of ‘democracy’ has this design. And those same Liberal lovers dare to call The West traitorous, stupid, delusional? OMG lmao go look in the mirror. As for that king visit business … they can keep him - the sooner the monarchy shuffles into the distant past, the better.
At least from where I sit, Ruth, there is a lot of empathy with most of Alberta's concerns - and while we don't live through them as directly in the way you do, many of us share equal frustration on behalf of what could be a much better Canada as a whole. I have written on a number of the topics as you know and pressed for their change. And while I do not either favour or support the breaking up of my country in any way, the status quo cannot hold forever. Unfortunately no party spoke of electoral reform or a change to equalization payments in this past election - both important changes to bring more balance to things. I am, however, waiting to see where this new government goes with regards to oil & gas development, mining, EV mandates and carbon legislation. If they can move things back into better balance, it will be a reasonable start.
I recognize that won't play for some of the strongest separatist forces in Alberta, but it would be a pragmatic start.
I hear what you’re saying, I do. And it’s good to know that maybe there’s a meaningful conversation happening in eastern & central Canada. But, like everyone else, people for the most part are busy with their own lives & catching dribs & drabs on news sites & react with ‘what’s wrong with these Albertans?’
Having lived a long life, one readily notices macro/micro patterns. This, what’s going on here, is like watching a bad marriage run its rocky course. One partner, for years & years, comments, asks, begs, for whatever. Attention, recognition, honesty, fairness … and then, that person just stops talking. They start planning for a different future. Whether or not it’s an ideal or perfect situation, it’s simply over. They’re done.
I see & hear a lot of just that. It is what it is. And it’s not going away anytime soon. The Liberal minister, can’t recall his name, who showed up to offer whatever promises, is simply being observed. No one is yelling ‘yay, finally.’ It’s just another Ottawa suit, saying ‘wait, what? I promise to be nicer. Don’t go, don’t you see what you have with me? Don’t you want to preserve what we have built together?’
I have been telling Leaf fans that the Toronto Maple Leafs will never win a Stanley Cup, as long as they keep voting for the Liberals. My winning streak continues, unlike the Leafs, or Canadians stuck with a Liberal government again thanks to the Leafs fans.
I read something funny last week that a guy's neighbour told him the Leafs always won when he mowed his lawn that same day. Apparently he didn't mow last Sunday. Your connection of Liberal voting sounds no less plausible to me.

Thanks, Paul.

Thanks FTLOF. Glad you enjoy the writing.

Sorry for poking a fresh wound re: the Leafs, Mark. Not sure it makes the comparison any less accurate, though.

And the Oilers? Canucks? Flames?
Habs?
